The location is great, the rooms are charming and the staff is pleasant. The inside door handle to the room fell off as we were leaving, there is a strong odor of perfumed cleaning products and the stairway carpet needs replacing. Once we aired the room, the odor went away. It's an old hotel.

This hotel is extremely old, not that its a problem but the second we walked into our room we could smell the scent of OLD. The bathroom we had had rust on the tub, they do not supply with the correct toiletries. They gave us two soaps, one shampoo, and two mouthwashs. I've stayed at more simpler hotels and they always have conditioner. There was no fruit in our room as the site mentioned, and the complementary breakfast? Was insane. On top of the bar, there was one tray covered with a blanket that obtained exactly 5 pastries, (2 croissants, and 3 muffins). Mind you we had breakfast at 8:30am, its not like we woke up late and the food ran out. There was coffee and orange juice, and thats it. No cereal, no eggs, no toast, no fresh fruit. Not your usual complimentary breakfast. The hotel is very creepy and old, makes you feel like if you are in a scary movie. My suggestion is pay a little more, and get a lot more than you would at the St. Michel.

We were attending a conference so really we were at the hotel only at night. My husband said he really didn't have time to enjoy it, but I loved all the little details: the decoration, the wooden floors in the room and all tile in the bathroom, the fixtures, the beautiful french windows, the old style elevator, the hotel entry and foyer, and the seet, very helpful gentleman who checked us in. It was a great room for the money and it is in a very nice area - 2-3 minutes from the Miracle Mile 7-8 minutes from UM. There are several nice restaurants on the Miracle Mile, and even just a couple blocks over, as well as 4 or 5 nice bakeries and coffee shops. I absolutely loved our time there and would definitely stay again if we are in the area.

Recently stayed here and I would make the following suggestions: 1- Do away with the in room "basket of fruit" because it is a joke. Giving me 1 ugly apple and 1 orange from the previous guest that wouldn't touch it is just plain silly. Instead, they should have a nice basket full of fruit at the front desk, available to any guest, anytime. 2- Perform a VERY THOROUGH cleaning of all common area carpets, walls, baseboards, handrails and especially the rooms. They need to be properly dusted, some touch up paint, good scrubbing, wash or replace the shower curtains, improve the bedding and the lighting and by God, get rid of those roaches!! 3- Overall, this hotel is really cute with lots of period character and pleasant staff in an excellent location. It just needs a really good and thorough cleaning.

Has charm and character by using antique furniture. Clean room, but definitely needs to update its linens. Great location, but parking is across the street with no valet. Restaurant downstairs was vacant. Continental breakfast only consisted of coffee, OJ, and one kind of muffin. No pay per view. Free wireless internet pretty decent and fast. A/C works wonderfully with Miami heat. Hotel personnel nice and friendly. Overall I had a decent stay, but I wish the parking situation was different but that's Miami for ya!

The Hotel Place St. Michel is an old-world, service oriented hotel located in a remarkably well-maintained, clean and fully functional Art-Deco building. The location is central, and easily reached from any part of the city including the airport within minutes. This place oozes charm and class. From the fully functional, bellhop-operated Otis elevator (I just had to ride it at least once despite my room being located on the second floor) to the friendly, well-mannered staff. While the adjacent restaurant (Restaurant St. Michel) has been a well known fine dining spot for at least 30 years, it maintains an elegant, yet low key atmosphere that appeals to us mere mortals :). The traveler may also find a number of other restaurants featuring several culinary styles from good old hamburgers and fries (Coral Gables Grill) to Pan-Asian, Italian and of course Latin fare within easy walking distance. Area clubs include anything from cool jazz to funk and rock-n-roll as well as authentic Spanish taverns ("Tablaos") Irish Pubs, and 70's and 80's style discotheques featuring vintage European disco and techno music as well as hot Latin music (This is Miami after all! ;D). All of these attractions are located within a ten-block radius, as is Coral Gables' world-famous "Miracle Mile." Well, if you haven't guessed it yet, I am already looking forward to my NEXT stay! Great place for a romantic getaway!

We had the most delightful stay at the St. Michel. It's a very old 28-room hotel with beautiful art and antique furniture everywhere, including the common areas and inside the junior suite we booked. French windows all around the room opened out for fresh air in the morning. The room was clean and surprisingly up to date...flat screen TV, a/c and free wi-fi. The day manager is a wonderful older gentleman who called me by name as I entered the hotel. The rest of the staff was satisfactory, but could have been more gracious. Staff ran the elevator and delivered ice to our room upon request. It markets itself as a European style hotel, but this was better than what we found in Europe. Continental breakfast was nice, but the clerk handling it was extremely sour, seemingly annoyed that I asked her to heat up a muffin. Parking was great on the weekend, just get a $10 roll of quarters for the meter 9am to 10pm. Weekly, parking at the garage across the street is only $9 a night. Bedding was excellent, and there was lots to see and do in Coral Gables, with the Fairchild Garden and Biltmore Hotel only a few miles away. We plan to use the hotel every time we go to Miami from now on. Excellent.

Blast from the past is right - especially when it comes to the beds - they squeaked and the mattress was so old there was a dip in the middle. I felt I was sleeping in dust mite central and not at all happy about that given I have allergies. There was no restaurant and I tried to call reception at midnight and no reply - only wonder what would have happened if I was in need of help if there was an emergency. There's old world charm and then places that are just not kept well. The fruit basket was a china basket with an apple and an orange - both of which had seen better days.

This is a matter of style. Some people like this type of 40' style, but I'm not a fan at all. The hotel elevator requires special handling with a wood and metal giant stick and no buttons. The hotel ambiance is very dark in general, furnished with dated furniture and antiques all over the place, including very scary wall paintings. Again, this may be paradise for some, just that I'm not in that group.

This hotel is old, not quaint. The same is true of the bedding and pillows which have probably been in service since the hotel's opening. Other dirty things: 1. The TV remote had visible gunk on it (gross!) 2. The shower enclosure 3. The floor throughout (which thankfully was wood, so maybe fewer germs can survive there than on carpet, but please run a broom over the place now and again) Other complaints: Coming and going after dark required waiting for someone to unlock the front door. This isn't a bad neighborhood and I'm not a big fan of the bed and breakfast intimacy that this monitoring of my coming and going brought to this hotel. Good things: 1. Location 2. Maybe price at least compared to other hotels in the area, but I'd pay a bit more somewhere else next time since overall, even for the relatively low price, this place wasn't a good value.
